About Carrie Basas

I am an attorney and organizational strategist who collaborates with executive leaders, boards, and public-sector decision-makers as they navigate complex and high-stakes challenges where values, law, and operational realities intersect. My background spans law, governance, and systems change. I have held roles such as Executive Director of statewide disability rights organizations, Director of the Washington State Governor’s Office of the Education Ombuds, and professor of law and business, where I taught courses in disability rights, labor law, corporate social responsibility, ethics, and governance. I am also a licensed attorney in Washington State. My work is grounded in both rigorous professional training and my own lived experience with disability. This perspective allows me to clearly see how systems often falter under pressure and understand what is required to build decisions, policies, and structures that are sustainable and effective. Through Aligna, I collaborate with organizations to move from intention to meaningful, accountable action. I believe inclusion is not an optional enhancement but a structural necessity. My approach frames access, equity, and belonging as valuable insights into risk, power, and system design. By prioritizing perspectives that reveal potential failures early, I help leaders anticipate limitations, minimize harm, and make thoughtful decisions before crises arise. I earned my Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from Harvard Law School, an M.Ed. in Education Policy from the University of Washington, and a B.A. with Honors from Swarthmore College, where I was a Truman Scholar and Eugene Lang Scholar. I am a licensed attorney in Washington State.
